Yordan Sokolov
President of the National Assembly
at the solemn celebration of Dimitar Peshev
Sofia, November 6th 1998

My dear Mr. Vice President, distinguished cabinet ministers, distinguished Members of Parliament, my dear Mr. Speaker of the Knesset of the State of lsrael, Mr. Dan Tikhon, my dear Mr. Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament, Mr. Pierluigi Petrini, distinguished members of the delegations from Italy and lsrael, dear relative and friends of Dimitar Peshev and of the rest of his 42 fellow members of parliament, Ladies and Gentlemen!

It is a great privilege and a matter of moral satisfaction for me to declare open this solemn celebration dedicated to the great deed of a truly notable Bulgarian, a Vice President of the Bulgarian Parliament, and of his 42 fellow members of parliament, who, by their noteworthy deed, contributed greatly right here, in this same hall, to the rescue of Bulgaria's Jews, an act ranking among the most celebrated acts in Bulgaria's modern history, an act that the Bulgarian nation and the Bulgarian state take great pride in.

Before yielding the floor to the Honourable Vice President of the National Assembly, Mr. Ivan Kurtev, and asking him to chair this celebration from here on, I have a pleasant obligation to discharge now. I have been asked by the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Mr. Petar Stoyanov, to read out his Decree on awarding a decoration to the author of the book 'The Man Who Stopped Hitler', Mr. Gabriele Nissim, as well as to hand him the insignia of honour that has been bestowed upon him.
